Introduction: Studying Creation in NYC

Introduction to a series profiling the largest content creation-related jobs markets in the USA.

This post introduces the content series, Studying Creation in NYC. It is part of a larger project called Content Creation Jobs, which aims to create study- and career-planning resources for students with a passion and personal aptitude for content creation. Each post in this series lists university-level programs that train students for the careers profiled in our Content Creation Jobs series.

How are Programs Chosen? These listings were developed using the Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data (IPEDS) System. This data includes information on government-registered U.S. postsecondary education institutions. I narrowed down this database to schools in metro NYC through zip codes associated with New York City’s Core-Based Statistical Area in the March 2020 Census Delineation File. Then, I matched the database’s listed programs to the Standard Occupation Classification (SOC) codes featured in Content Creation Jobs using the CIP-SOC Crosswalk File, a joint venture between Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). This set represents BLS and NCES analysts’ efforts to link SOC codes to the Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) classification system of postsecondary programs. So the programs listed in this series describe their programs in ways that analysts at the BLS and NCES believe are relevant to the careers featured in this project.

Minimum Class Size. Our list is restricted to programs that graduated at least five students in 2021.

Am I Wrong, or Missing Something? These lists are works in progress. Share your knowledge or experience in the comments section of the program listings associated with individual occupations. The links to individual programs will be very buggy. Please post the proper websites in the comments section below, though comments with hyperlinks may be held in moderation in an attempt to thwart spamming. Help students by sharing what you know of these programs, what they teach, and their value to advancing your career in these fields.
