Introduction: Content Creation Jobs

An introduction to the Content Creation Jobs content series.

This post introduces the Content Creation Jobs content series. It profiles standard occupations whose central tasks or skill sets overlap with the talents and passions of students who are interested in creating content. These occupations:

  1. Offer established job markets that students might be interested in pursuing.
  2. Have a created universes of occupation-specific knowledge and communications that can help creators up various aspects of their game

Content creators come in many varieties, and they lean on different skill sets to develop successful media outlets. Some creators love and rely on writing skills. Others are performers. Still others are expert promoters. And others like using technology to shape raw video, audio, or text into new and unique experiences. There are many kinds of creators, with established lines of work from which to learn and seek opportunities.

Occupations Featured

This series profiles 32 occupations listed in the 2018 Standard Occupational Classification System that share common knowledge and skill sets with many content creation enterprises. We follow the classifications developed in the SOC to group our occupations into seven groups:

Enterprise Communications (SOC: 11-*)

These occupations are responsible for orchestrating an organization’s communications with interest groups (e.g., customers, regulators, employees, shareholders, the media, and the public).

  • Advertising and Promotions Managers: Plan and coordinate advertising and promotional campaigns, requiring creativity and content to persuade consumers. (11-2011)
  • Marketing Managers: Craft marketing messages, leveraging content to engage target audiences. (11-2021).
  • Public Relations Managers: Manage company image, utilizing content creation to shape public perception.
  • Public Relations Specialist: Create and promote public images for clients. (27-3031)

Digital Communications Specialists (SOC: 15-*)

This group of occupations specializes in creating computer- or Internet-based communications, content, or media. They leverage skills that blend computer science, design, and content creation to create new forms of information and culture.

Artists and Designers (SOC: 27-1*)

Occupations that involve the creation of appealing, affect-inducing, or otherwise-effective visual or overall experiential products.

  • Art Director: Oversee visual aspects of projects, guiding content creation to achieve desired aesthetics. (27-1011)
  • Fine Artists: Create visual art, expressing ideas and emotions through content. (27-1013)
  • Special Effects Artists and Animators: Create images that appear to move and visual effects for various forms of media and entertainment.
  • Graphic Designers: Create visual concepts using content to communicate messages. (27-1024)
  • Set and Exhibit Designers: Design sets and exhibits, shaping content to create immersive experiences.

Performers (SOC: 27-2*)

These occupations specialize in the human performance elements of content creation

Writers and Speakers (SOC: 27-3*)

These occupations specialize in the communication through words, text, and speech

  • Broadcast Announcers and Radio Disc Jockeys: Present news, sports or interview guests on media such as radio and television. (27-3011)
  • News Analysts, Reporters, and Journalists: Research and report news, using content to inform and engage audiences.
  • Public Relations Specialists: Create and maintain a positive public image for the clients they represent, utilizing content to shape public perception.
  • Editors: Plan, review, and revise content for publication. (27-3041).
  • Technical Writers. Writes text pertaining to technical items. (27-3042). 
  • Writers and Authors: Develop written content for informational, cultural, or entertainment products. (27-3043)

Media Technicians (SOC: 27-4* and 43-9*)

Occupations that specialize in the use of technology to capture, edit, and enhance informational or cultural products.

  • Audio and Video Technicians: Set up audiovisual equipment, supporting content creation in various industries.
  • Sound Engineering Technicians: Manage audio quality, enhancing content through improved sound.
  • Lighting Technicians: Control lighting, using content to enhance visual impact and atmosphere. (27-4014)
  • Lighting Technician: Design and manage lighting schemes for productions (27-4015)
  • Photographers: Use their technical expertise, creativity, and composition skills to produce and preserve images. (27-4021)
  • Camera Operators, Television, Video, and Film: Operate cameras to capture images and footage, utilizing content to engage viewers. (27-4031)
  • Film and Video Editors: Edit film and video footage to shape content and tell compelling stories, utilizing content to convey messages and emotions. (27-4032)
  • Desktop Publishers: Format and design print materials, using content to create visually appealing documents. (43-9031).
  • Proofreaders and Copy Markers: Review written content, ensuring accuracy and adherence
