we will look at how to load a data set
that is already formatted for use in
stata
you load it into status memory by using
the command
use
the syntax to load a stata formatted
data set is use
space
opening quotation marks
the name of the data set
and then
dot dta
close quotation marks
comma
space
clear
for example
if i have a data set called gss data
i would type in use
space quotation marks gss data
dot dta close quotation marks comma
clear
the option clear tells data to replace
the data you’re loading with any data
that’s already in status memory
if you don’t use this option stata will
not load your new data set
let’s see what it looks like to load a
stata formatted data set in a live
status session
i want to load a data set called 712 set
1
gss
i type use space quotation mark and then
the name of the data set 7 12 set 1 gss
in parentheses dot dta close quotation
marks comma clear
i hit enter
if i did it correctly the variable
should be listed in the variables window
